Incident Investigation
Unfortunately, crane failures and crane accidents do occur and result in economic loss and/or personal injury.  Zeus Engineering Ltd.'s experience with both crane inspection/repair and failure analysis provides a strong combination for the investigation of crane incidents.  Our professional engineers have carried out failure investigations on lifting equipment for numerous clients including owner/operators, insurance appraisers, insurance adjusters and lawyers.

The rental of this 65 Ton crane resulted in a catastrophic failure of the boom during a lift.  The subsequent investigation carried out by Zeus Engineering Ltd. proved the failure to be the result of operator error and not structural failure as purported by the renter of the crane.

Repeated failures of the outrigger box side plate in this crane were blamed on crane overload resulting from operator error.  Zeus Engineering’s investigation found the outrigger stops to be damaged, allowing the outrigger beam to overextend without the operator being aware.  With the beam overextended, failure was found to occur even when the lifted load was within the rated capacity of the crane.

During a lifting operation, the boom foot pin tube from this crane failed catastrophically.  Zeus Engineering Ltd’s investigation found the material the pin tube was fabricated from had extremely poor fracture toughness and therefore was susceptible to brittle fracture.  The material choice for this application was determined to be the cause of the failure and the manufacturer took steps to replace the affected crane booms.
