Provincial occupational health and safety acts require equipment to be certified by a professional engineer at least every 12 months when manufacturer's specifications cannot be ascertained (Province of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act - General Safety Regulations).  Zeus Engineering has many years of experience in the inspection of mobile cranes, tower cranes, and facility cranes.  All crane inspections are carried out by our full time inspection personnel under the guidance and supervision of a professional engineer.
Mobile cranes include truck mounted stiff and knuckle boom units, conventional, rough terrain and hydraulic cranes.  In Canada the inspection and operation of these cranes is governed by CSA Z150.  Zeus Engineering Ltd. uses visual and magnetic particle inspection methods during all crane inspections for the detection of cracks and other linear defects.  Hardness tests are routinely performed to ensure weld filler metal matches the parent plate during weld repairs.
Tower crane use is governed in Canada by CSA Standard Z248.  As required by this specification, Zeus Engineering Ltd. Is certified as a visual weld inspection organization by the Canadian Welding Bureau and therefore is qualified for the non-destructive inspection of these crane types.  When considered necessary, such as with tower crane mast bolts, additional nondestructive methods such as ultrasonic, wet fluorescent magnetic particle and hardness testing are employed.
Facility cranes include overhead, gantry, monorail and jib cranes.  The maintenance and inspection of these lifting devices is governed by CSA-B167.  Since many of these cranes are incorporated into the actual building structure, this crane type is unique in its inspection requirements.  Zeus Engineering Ltd. staff includes structural engineers familiar with both the crane and building requirements.
