Zeus Engineering Ltd. is a professional engineering consulting firm based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that has 16 years of experience in the areas of failure analysis, stress analysis, design and inspection.  Through this specialized knowledge the company provides solutions to both large and small industrial problems as well as carrying out routine testing.
Zeus Engineering employs engineers who may practice professionally in Alberta, BC and Saskatchewan, providing professional and technical services on a time or fixed fee basis.
Failure Analysis
Failure analysis is a multidiscipline approach to examining a failed component.  The process incorporates both academic and practical knowledge to not only identify potential root causes, but also to provide recommendations to prevent its reoccurrence.
Failure analysis is carried out on any component, part or structure where it is important to know why failure occurred.  Zeus Engineering Ltd. has carried out analysis on diverse products - from simple water taps and house fittings to heavy lift cranes and pipelines.  Our clients include owners, lawyers, adjusters, appraisers and insurance companies.
Failure analysis has historically been conducted by metallurgical engineers or metallurgical engineering companies.  Although this approach deals with the material aspects of the problem, the mechanical concerns are dealt with superficially or they are not considered at all.  By incorporating both metallurgical and mechanical engineers in the analysis, a more thorough analysis and complete understanding results.
Stress Analysis
Stress analysis involves the identification of critical areas within a component and the calculation of the reserve material strength for a given applied load.  The considered loading can be in many forms including point and distributed loads, temperature, impact and cyclic.  The analysis can take many forms from simplified hand calculations to sophisticated computer models.  In addition, the actual generated stresses can be measured using field techniques such as strain gauges and brittle coating.
Weld Engineering
When metallic materials require joining, welding is the principal process used.  Since its inception welding has brought new processes and techniques, each with their own unique advantages and applications.  Common processes used in the fabrication of steel structures include Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).  Zeus Engineering Ltd. has years of experience related to the various processes and the development of welding procedures and qualifications.
In conjunction with the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB), Zeus Engineering Ltd. acts as a retained engineer for numerous fabricators assisting them in the areas of welding processes and procedures.  In addition, procedure qualification records (PQR) and welding procedure specification (WPS) can be prepared to satisfy the requirements of ASME Section IX.  Finally, all of the practical welding experience gained by Zeus Engineering Ltd. is used to develop and implement real-world weld and repair procedures.  These procedures represent a bridge between the science of engineering and the practical aspects of welding technology.
Lifting Equipment Inspection Services
Zeus Engineering Ltd. has been involved in the inspection, repair and certification of all varieties of lifting equipment.  Our experience ranges from small capacity picker trucks and jibs, to large capacity hydraulic cranes and container handlers.
Zeus Engineering Ltd. is a certified visual welding inspection company registered with the Canadian Welding Bureau and employs three full-time certified inspectors.  Inspections are carried out using our in-house procedures that primarily incorporate visual and magnetic particle methods.  Ultrasonic, liquid penetrant and radiography inspection methods are also implemented as required.
Zeus Engineering Ltd. acts as retained engineers for steel fabrication companies requiring certification to CSA W47.1.  This hands-on approach to welding and fabrication methods provides Zeus clients with a practical approach to crane repair and modification.
